Chapter 9 ยท reference

Projects and the library

Keep your work safe in project files, build up a library of finished walls you can export, nest and glaze in batches, and keep favourite windows and doors ready to drop onto any panel.

1Projects: open, save, save as

A BrickIT! project is one .bpg file. It holds everything you have drawn: every panel and layer, the brick size and scale, the line colours, and the Building window's settings for the carcass, floors and roof. Projects are opened and saved from the File menu:

File menuKeysWhat it does
New PanelCtrl+NAdds a new panel to the project and makes it the active one, as + Add Layer does. Nothing is closed or lost.
Open Project...Ctrl+OOpens a .bpg file in place of what is open, with all its panels.
Save ProjectCtrl+SSaves over the file you opened. The first time, it asks where to save and what to call it.
Save Project As...Ctrl+Shift+SSaves a copy under a new name, which then becomes the file you are working on.
Export SVG...Ctrl+EExports the active panel for the laser, as the Export SVG button does (chapter 4).
Send Windows to GlazeIT!The open project's glazing schedule (section 9).
Export / Import Opening Library...Back up or share your saved openings (section 10).
Export / Import Panel Library...Back up or share your Panel Library (section 7).
Tip

Save often, and use Save Project As... to keep a copy before a big change, such as replacing the walls with a library selection. BrickIT! has no undo for the drawing.

2The Panel Library

The Panel Library is your own catalogue of finished work, kept by BrickIT! itself rather than in any one project, so every project can use it. Open it with the ๐Ÿ“š Library button 1 in the bar over the preview.

The bar over the preview: Rulers, Dims, then the Library button marked 1, Building and 3D.
The Panel Library window, 42 panels: the name box and Save Current; the search box and Select all; the selection buttons, greyed out with nothing selected; four folded groups of 145th Street panels with their counts, and the open Examples group with Crowhurst station, Buttercrambe church and Robertsbridge chapel, each with a coloured preview, its size, bond and openings, and Load and Delete buttons.
The library with its groups folded except one. The number on a preview is how many panels and layers the entry holds.

From the top, the window has the box for saving what is open, the search box, the buttons that act on the selected entries, and the entries themselves in their groups. Each entry shows a preview, its name, the size of its main panel, its bond, how many openings it has and the date it was saved.

  • Load opens the entry in the editor in place of the panels you have open, with its layers, brick size and colours.
  • Delete takes it out of the library, after asking.
Load replaces what is open

Save your project before you load a library entry if you want to keep it. To bring a library entry into the open project as an extra panel, use Add to project instead (section 8).

3Save a panel to the library

  1. Get the panel ready in the editor: everything that is open goes into the entry, every panel and layer.
  2. Click ๐Ÿ“š Library, type a name in the Panel name... box, and click Save Current (or press Enter).
The Panel name box with Crowhurst station ยท whole building typed in, and the Save Current button.

The entry is drawn as a preview from the panels themselves, and it goes into the Ungrouped group until you move it into one.

Name kit pieces with an ID first

If you name an entry with a short ID, then ยท (a middle dot with a space each side), then a description - for example E-2030-01-F ยท 2710 Frederick Douglass Blvd ยท front - BrickIT! uses the ID alone as the file name when you export a batch, and the ID and the third part (here front) as the panel's name when you open several entries as one project.

An entry keeps the panels and their layers. It does not keep the Building window's floors, roof and carcass settings: for those, save the project.

4Groups and search

Groups are folders for entries - one for each kit, building or street block. To put entries in a group, select them (tick their boxes), click Move to groupโ€ฆ, and type the group's name. Type a name that already exists to add them to that group; leave it blank to take them out of any group.

The box asking for a group for the 3 selected panels, blank for none, with Examples typed in, and Cancel and OK.

Each group has a bar with its name and how many entries it holds. Click the name to fold the group away or open it again; tick the box at the start of the bar to select every entry in it. Groups are listed in order of name, with Ungrouped last.

The search box finds entries by name or group as you type, and opens every group with something in it. Select all found then selects just what the search found:

The library searched for 2710 (1), with Select all found ticked (2): the three walls of 2710 Frederick Douglass Blvd are selected and the selection buttons (3) are lit, with 3 selected.
1

The search box: here 2710, a building's street number.

2

Select all (Select all found while you search) ticks everything shown, or unticks it again.

3

How many entries are selected, and the buttons that act on them (next section). Clear unselects everything.

5Work on a selection

Everything in this bar works on the selected entries, however many there are and whichever groups they are in:

The selection buttons: 3 selected, Export SVG, Export DXF, Detail layers, Send to Nest, Send windows to GlazeIT!, Open as one project, Add to project, Refresh previews, Move to group, Delete, Clear.
ButtonWhat it does
Export SVG, Export DXFOne file per entry, exactly as that panel's own Export SVG or Export DXF makes it (section 6).
Detail layersEach entry's detail layer - its stone features as separate parts - packed or in place, as set under Output/Export.
Send to NestAdds the entries to Nest Parts and packs them onto as many sheets as they need.
Send windows to GlazeIT!A glazing schedule of every opening on them (section 9).
Open as one project, Add to projectThe entries as the panels of one project, or added to the open one (section 8).
Refresh previewsRedraws their previews from the panels themselves.
Move to groupโ€ฆPuts them in a group (section 4).
DeleteTakes them out of the library, after asking.

The buttons that work through the entries one by one show their progress, with a Stop button. While they run, BrickIT! loads each entry in turn, exactly as Load would; when they finish, the project you had open is put back as it was.

Refreshing previews: a progress bar, 5 of 9, and a Stop button.

Refresh previews

Entries that come from a library file made elsewhere may have only a plain outline for a preview, and an entry's preview can fall out of date after a new version of BrickIT! draws things better. Select them and click Refresh previews:

Three entries of the E-2030 group with plain outline previews labelled with their IDs.
Before: plain outlines.
The same three entries, selected, now with previews of the brick facades with their windows and shopfronts.
After Refresh previews.

6Export many at once

To cut a whole kit, you do not need to load and export each wall in turn:

  1. Select the entries - a whole group with the box on its bar, or a search and Select all found.
  2. Click Export SVG or Export DXF.
  3. Choose a folder. Every file goes into it, and BrickIT! tells you how many it wrote and where.

Each file is named after its entry - the ID alone when the name starts with one, so the five walls of the E-2031 block came out as E-2031-03a-F.svg, E-2031-03a-S.svg, E-2031-03b-F.svg and so on. Two entries with the same name keep both files: the second gets (2) after its name.

Detail layers works the same way, making one file of detail parts for each entry that has stone features. Any without are left out, and BrickIT! tells you how many.

Send to Nest

Send to Nest puts the selected panels on the Nest Parts tab, packed onto as many sheets of the size set there as they need, and takes you to it. Here, seven party walls from three street blocks on 300 ร— 200 mm sheets:

The Nest Parts tab: Sheet Settings 300 by 200 mm, the library list, Parts on Sheet (7) with each part's sheet and position, and the Nesting Preview with two party walls side by side on the first sheet.
Nesting and cutting the sheets are covered in chapter 4.

7Share and import library files

A library file is a .json file of entries - for sending a kit to a friend, backing up, or moving your library to another computer.

  • Export: in the library window, Export libraryโ€ฆ saves every entry; with entries selected it reads Export 3 as libraryโ€ฆ (or however many) and saves just those. File โ€บ Export Panel Library... saves the whole library.
  • Import: Importโ€ฆ in the library window, or File โ€บ Import Panel Library..., and choose the file.

Before anything is added, BrickIT! compares the file with your library and shows you what it found:

Import panels: 13 panels in the file; 10 new, added; 1 already in your library, unchanged, left as it is; 2 already in your library, changed, with the choices Update them (selected), Skip them and Keep both, a list of the two changed panels, and Cancel and Import.
  • New entries are always added.
  • Entries already in your library, unchanged, are left as they are.
  • For entries already in your library, changed, you choose:
    • Update them replaces your copies with the file's, in the same place in your library - including older versions the file says these replace;
    • Skip them keeps your copies and adds only the new entries;
    • Keep both adds the file's versions alongside yours, with (imported) after their names.

Click Import, and BrickIT! tells you how many entries were added, updated, and left unchanged or skipped. Imported entries keep their groups.

8A building from the library

When a kit's walls are separate library entries - a front, a corner and a return, say - select them all and use one of these two buttons:

The selection bar with 3 selected: Open as one project marked 1 and Add to project marked 2.
1

Open as one project makes a new project with each selected entry as a panel, in place of the open project (BrickIT! asks first). It uses the first entry's brick size, scale and colours, and warns you if the others differ. The new project has no file yet, so Save Project asks for a name.

2

Add to project adds the entries to the project you have open, as extra panels. They start hidden; show them from the panel list.

Each entry's own panels come across (not its reveal layers), named by the entry's ID and its third part. Opening the three walls of 2710 Frederick Douglass Blvd as one project gives three panels, ready for the Building window (chapter 5), whose Fill the missing walls adds plain panels for any sides you have not drawn:

The panel list: E-2030-01-F front, E-2030-01-CS corner and E-2030-01-S south, each in its own colour.
The new project's panels.
The front wall in the preview: a five-storey brick facade with numbered windows W1 to W20, two shop windows W21 and W22 and a door D1.
The front, the first panel, open in the preview.

9Send windows to GlazeIT!

GlazeIT! 2, the companion app for designing and cutting glazing, can start from a glazing schedule made by BrickIT!: every opening on your walls, grouped by size and shape, with how many there are and which panel each is on. Send one:

  • for the open project: File โ€บ Send Windows to GlazeIT!;
  • for any library entries: select them, and click Send windows to GlazeIT! in the library window.

BrickIT! opens the schedule in GlazeIT!. If GlazeIT! is not installed, it saves the schedule and tells you where, so you can open it later.

Openings go in the same group when they are the same kind (window or door), shape, width and height, with the same head - square, or an arch of the same type and rise - and the same mullions, glazing bars or door. A flat (jack) arch counts as a square head, since the glass is square. Reveal layers and front layers are left out, so each window is counted once. Here is what the three walls of 2710 Frederick Douglass Blvd sent:

OpeningSize (mm)HeadHow manyOn
Window13.3 ร— 23Square32E-2030-01-F, E-2030-01-S
Window13.3 ร— 16.3Semicircular, 6.65 rise8E-2030-01-F, E-2030-01-S
Window11.2 ร— 23Square8E-2030-01-CS
Window45.8 ร— 40Square2E-2030-01-F
Window11.2 ร— 17.4Semicircular, 5.6 rise2E-2030-01-CS
Window30.4 ร— 40Square1E-2030-01-CS
Window44 ร— 40Square1E-2030-01-S
Door16 ร— 34Square1E-2030-01-F

Fifty-five openings come down to eight sizes to glaze. Windows come first, the commonest at the top. A window with glazing bars (chapter 3) is listed with them, so GlazeIT! knows one plain pane goes behind BrickIT!'s card bars; a window with a stone frame in the core is marked for a plain pane glued on the back of the core.

10The Opening Library

The Opening Library keeps single windows and doors - with their arch, mullions, tracery, cill, lintel and quoins - to put on any panel. It is kept by BrickIT!, not in the project.

Save an opening

  1. On the Windows & Doors card, click the opening in the list (or in the preview) to select it.
  2. Click ๐Ÿ’พ Save 1. Its name starts as its type and size, such as Window 12ร—22; type a better one and click OK.
The Windows and Doors card with an opening selected: Copy and Delete, then Library marked 2 and Save marked 1.
Enter a name for this opening: Crowhurst booking office door, with Cancel and OK.

It goes in the library as a window or a door, as it is on the panel. Its position is not kept: only what it is.

Browse and use the library

Click ๐Ÿ“š Library 2 with an opening selected, or ๐Ÿ“š Opening Library under Add Opening when none is.

The Opening Library: a name box, a Window/Door/Custom list and Save Selected; the tabs All, Windows, Doors and Custom; two entries, Crowhurst round-headed window, 12 by 22 mm, Semi, and Crowhurst booking office door, 13.5 by 30 mm, each with Add to Panel, a rename button and a category list; and 2 openings in library.
  • Save from here: with an opening selected, the top row saves it under the name you type, as a Window, Door or Custom, with Save Selected.
  • Find one: the tabs show All, or only ๐ŸชŸ Windows, ๐Ÿšช Doors or โš™๏ธ Custom. Each entry shows its size and, in short, its arch (Jack, Seg, Semi, Lancet and so on), its lights, and whether it has a cill and quoins.
  • Use one: Add to Panel puts a copy on the active panel at the X and Y in the Windows & Doors card, and selects it so you can move it into place.
  • Tidy up: โœ๏ธ renames an entry, the small list changes its category, and ร— deletes it.
The bottom of the Windows and Doors card with nothing selected: Add Opening, and the Opening Library button marked 1.

To back up or share the Opening Library, use File โ€บ Export Opening Library... and Import Opening Library.... An import adds the openings you do not already have and skips the ones you do.
